California Proposition 65 Warning Labels Now on Residential Equipment

Effective August 30, 2018, California’s Proposition 65 has been updated. As part of the code update, manufacturers have new notification requirements for consumers in California.

While HVAC Distributors does not do business in California, several of our manufacturer partners have chosen to put new hazardous material warning labels on all of their equipment. These manufacturers include Goodman Manufacturing (Amana and Goodman brands) and ClimateMaster.

If you see new warning labels on equipment, understand that nothing has changed with the equipment itself. Manufacturers are simply following California regulation to inform consumers of potential risks associated with products (like refrigerant) that are listed as hazardous in Proposition 65.

If homeowners express concern about the labels, you can explain that the only difference between equipment that you are replacing and the new equipment is this Proposition 65 notification requirement. The hazardous components of the system, like refrigerant and mechanical fluids used to keep the machine running properly, are not components that the homeowner would interact with on a day-to-day basis based on the normal running of the machine.
