Geothermal Tax Credit Reinstated – Retroactive to 2017

As part of the tax bill passed on Friday, February 9, Congress reinstated the federal geothermal tax credits for residential and commercial use.

Residential Geothermal Tax Credit

The residential credit (detailed below) applies to residential systems installed from January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2021.

Installation Year Tax Credit
2017 30%
2018 30%
2019 30%
2020 26%
2021 22%

Commercial Geothermal Tax Credit

The bill modifies language related to how commercial geothermal systems qualify for tax credits. Under the new bill, a commercial project becomes eligible for the tax credit in the year it commences, rather than the year the project’s system is placed into service.

For commercial geothermal systems, there is a 10% Federal Income Tax credit, which can be combined with solar and wind tax credits and energy-efficient building deductions.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you did geothermal installations in 2017, make sure those customers are aware that the credit has been reinstated. The IRS will post details here on how to claim this credit.
  • For commercial contractors, use this new rebate information to evaluate if geothermal may become a more viable solution for upcoming projects.
  • For residential contractors, make sure you’re leveraging the rebates in your marketing for geothermal. If you’re an HVAC Distributors customers and need help with your geothermal marketing, reach out to us.

Incorrect Speed Selection on Dip Switch Sticker on *MVC96/*CVC96 Furnace

Goodman has released Service Bulletin SF-075 concerning an error found on the dip switch sticker on select furnaces:

Goodman has discovered an error in the blower speed label affixed to the *MVC96 and *CVC*96 furnace product. Under the Speed Selection Dip Switches section of the door sticker the Heat Selection Switches Taps B, C, and D (S4-3 and S4-4 switches) are mislabeled.

Please refer to the following Switch Bank S4 chart that can be found in the installation instructions that come with the furnace regarding the proper settings below. These Dip Switch settings are for a Legacy (24 volt thermostat) setup as the Dip Switches are not used if the system is utilizing a Communicating thermostat.

Capture.JPG
If the factory default Dip Switch setting (B) was not changed there will be no change to the intended airflow. If the Dip Switch setting (B) was changed to match what was shown on the furnace label rather than the I&O then this would result in a minor increase in airflow as you are now operating as Tap (C).

Per page 39 of the installation instructions it is recommended to perform CFM verification at Startup as follows: “Select the desired heating speed tap by positioning switches S-4 3, 4 appropriately. Refer to figure above. Verify CFM in heating by noting the number displayed on the dual 7- segment display.”

There is no action required to correct the door sticker as this does not pose a safety or operational furnace issue. Units with serial prefixes of 1802 or later the door stickers have been corrected and are unaffected by the issue.

If you have questions about this bulletin, HVAC Distributors customers can reach out to our Technical Service department at 800.228.4822 x5.

Circuit Breaker Sizing on HKSC10 and Smaller Heat Kits

Goodman released the following bulletin, G-GN-OT-1494, regarding circuit breaker sizing on heat kits:

Circuit breakers furnished with the heat kits of 10kw and less are for safety disconnect purposes only and are not supplied to be used for circuit protection. The 60 amp breaker has been tested and approved by ETL to be used with the HKSC10 and smaller heat kits. The breaker is sized for 208/230V operation and approved by ETL for use with both voltages.

Heat Kits are shipped with label indicating “CIRCUIT BREAKER IS NOT INTENDED FOR BRANCH CIRCUIT PROTECTION. IT SERVES AS A DISCONNECT ONLY.”

Capture

At installation of the heater, this label should be affixed to the front of the indoor unit.

Note that the circuit breaker for the air handler branch circuit protection must be properly sized according to the MOP value. Please reference the product specification sheet for these values.

Paragraph 90.7.of the NEC states the following:
(It is the intent of this Code that factory-installed internal wiring or the construction of equipment need not be inspected at the time of installation of the equipment, except to detect alterations or damage, if the equipment has been listed by a qualified electrical testing laboratory that is recognized as having the facilities described in the preceding paragraph and that requires suitability for installation in accordance with this Code.)

If you have questions about this bulletin, HVAC Distributors customers can reach out to our Technical Service department at 800.228.4822 x5.
